Le coup du parapluie

William “Charlie” Athersmith was an early English star, leading Aston Villa to Premiere League titles in 1894, 1896, 1897, 1899 and 1900 and two F A cups, including winning the first ever “Double” in 1896. And precisely 1896 is the year of this card identified as the second oldest football card collection in history preceded only by a collection in 1892. But if Charlie Athersmith was so famous and still in Villa fans' mind is not for this card but for an outstanding story. During a league game in 1901 against Sheffield United which was played in driving freezing rain. Many of the players, including the legendary United goalkeeper Willie Foulke suffered mild frostbite in the bitter conditions. Finally, early in the second half Charlie had had enough and borrowed an umbrella from a member of the crowd. And then Athersmith, complete with umbrella later scored. Such an "incident" would perfectly fit Charlie's personality. There was a cheeky humour about the man and he could actually have crucified any defence while wearing a three-piece suit, bowler hat and carrying a briefcase to match his umbrella. He died at only 38.

Justement 1896 c'est la date de la première carte de ce sujet et est recensé comme la deuxième plus ancienne collection de cartes de football après une première collection remontant à 1892. Mais si Charlie Athersmith est si célèbre et toujours dans l'esprits des fans d'Aston Villa ce n'est pas pour cette carte mais pour une histoire incroyable. L'histoire se déroule lors d'un match de championnat en 1901 contre Sheffield United avec dans ses rangs le célèbre et incroyable gardien Willie Foulke. Il tombe ce jour-là une pluie gelée qui vous rentre jusqu'aux os et en seconde mi-temps, Athersmith n'en peut plus et file dans les gradins chipper un parapluie à un spectateur et finit la rencontre avec un parapluie à la main. Et le plus fort reste à venir, quelques minutes plus tard Athersmith marquera un but au géant Willie Foulke tout en ayant garder son parapluie
