UK Football Team - Southampton FC 1984

What a season for Southampton ! The best in the club's history. 3 points behind the champions Liverpool (22 victories both) Southampton's second place was their highest ever final position. The top match of the season was the 16th March 1984 when Southampton had emerged as surprise contenders for Liverpool in the title race. They also emerged as unlikely contenders for the double, but this quest was ultimately unsuccessful as well, as they were beaten 1–0 in extra time by eventual competition winners Everton in the FA Cup semi-final. With a perfect ending season and only 2 lost games in their last 18, Southampton finishes the season very strong with their runner-up position behind the best team in Europe, Liverpool. At the Dell (the name of the Saint's Stadium still 2001 and before the St Mary's Stadium) the Saints were terrific. Everton (3-1), Coventry (8-2), Tottenham (5-0 but with second team 3 days before european cup final) downed in southampton's ground in the final race of the championship. But as I said before the berst performance of their oustanding season was their incredible victory over the Reds in march 84. The man of the match was Danny WALLACE with a perfect double. His first goal was scored with his back to the goal, when he sent an overhead scissors-kick screaming past goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar, whilst for the second he threw himself in front of Alan Hansen to head home a superb cross from Mark Dennis, in a move involving Frank Worthington and Mark Wright. The first goal was named Goal of the Season for 1983–84. Have a look it's splendid :

The Saints under McMenemy's stewardship, and with a team containing old exeprimented players like Peter Shilton, Mick Mills, Nick Holmes, Franck Worthington (Have a look on the topic : Who looks like Franck Wortthington ?) and young players like Mark Wriht and top-scorer Steve Moran and Danny Wallace made their better season in club history. Here he come the Sains 1983-84 perfect season in Panini :
